Compliance-First Cloud Communications

Trust is the Foundation of Every Call and Message

Customer relationships require communication, and customers want to be kept informed. That said, there are numerous ways to reach people—and the bad actors responsible for spam calls and texts, phishing/smishing, spoofing, SIM swapping, and other fraudulent activities are constantly devising new ways to exploit phone numbers and fool people for criminal gain.

Responsible companies need to ensure they have permission to contact a customer, using the customer’s preferred form of communication, and utilize best practices. Modern voice and messaging aren’t just about connectivity anymore—they’re about trust, identity, and compliance.

These concerns extend beyond customer relationships to the entire telecom ecosystem and providers like Commio. Carriers, regulators, and consumers expect every call and message to be verified, permission based, and traceable to a legitimate sender. Businesses that ignore compliance risk spam labels, blocked traffic, carrier penalties, fines, and damaged customer relationships. The powers-that-be are doing everything they can to ensure non-compliant traffic simply Does. Not. Reach. Customers.

Know Your Customer (KYC)

Stop Bad Traffic Before It Starts – Due to all of the illegal robocalls and spam messaging, regulators and carriers now require providers to understand exactly who is sending traffic on their networks. That’s where Know Your Customer (KYC) comes in.

Reputable service providers like Commio use a KYC process to better understand the prospects they consider onboarding—to confirm how each prospect will use their services. KYC screens the prospect and verifies their business identity, intended use cases, traffic patterns,  consent practices, and more.

KYC questions may also include learning about the customer’s customer, if need be. If a customer of Commio intends to resell Commio services to other brands for outbound calling, those customers also need a rigorous and detailed KYC process and will need to provide Commio with information about their own KYC efforts.

The KYC process doesn’t stop at customer onboarding, either. Commio monitors traffic, participates in tracebacks, and analyzes transactions to prevent as much fraud as possible. KYC allows Commio to more easily identify when services have been misused, which leads to a more swift response. In addition, Commio’s Customer Success team is happy to provide compliance consultation on an ongoing basis.

Phone Number Management Made Easy at Commio

KYC ensures only legitimate, responsible businesses are allowed to send voice and messaging. In short, KYC creates trust. Commio can trust that the customers they onboard are genuine. Customers, in turn, can trust that Commio is sincere in its commitment to compliance and the reduction of fraud, and they’re protected by a compliant network.

Bottom line: Commio works with you every step of the way so your traffic stays clean and trusted long-term. Good actors deserve great deliverability. KYC enables it.

Restore Trust to Voice

STIR/SHAKEN, Branded Calling & More

Get Answered. Not Ignored. Consumers lose billions of dollars each year to telecom fraud, so these days the majority of them simply ignore unknown numbers. Spam labels destroy answer rates. Authentication and branding solve this.

As mandated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), STIR/SHAKEN digitally signs your calls to prove that you are who you say you are, your number hasn’t been spoofed, and your call is legitimate. Without authentication, carriers may downgrade or block your calls.

Commio also makes it easy for consumers to let us know if one of our numbers is being misused, via the “Report a Number” Unwanted Call and SMS Report form. Commio follows up on each report.

By using a responsive, compliant provider, you benefit from higher answer rates, fewer spam labels, better carrier trust, and regulatory compliance.

Registering in the RMD — and Why It Matters

The Robocall Mitigation Database (RMD) is a database maintained by the FCC where telecom providers certify their efforts to fight robocalling.

If your business simply makes calls using a compliant provider (such as most contact centers or enterprises) you don’t need to register directly—your carrier, such as Commio, does so on your behalf. With Commio, customers gain a compliant, RMD-listed voice network that helps legitimate business calls reach their destination.

Any company that originates, carries, or terminates voice calls on the U.S. public switched telephone network (PSTN) must be registered in the RMD. This includes interconnected and non-interconnected VoIP providers, local exchange carriers (LECs), and wholesale or intermediate carriers. In short, if your organization is responsible for placing calls onto the network or handing them off to another provider, you need to be listed in the RMD and certify your STIR/SHAKEN implementation or robocall mitigation program.

Registration isn’t just a formality. The Federal Communications Commission requires downstream carriers to block traffic from any upstream voice provider not in the RMD. That means calls from unregistered providers are increasingly unlikely to complete. By ensuring your voice provider is properly registered and compliant, you protect call deliverability, support industry-wide robocall prevention, and demonstrate that your outbound calling is trusted and accountable.

Branded Calling: Show Your Name, Logo & Reason for Calling

Branded calling starts with a rigorous registration process by independent reviewers, to ensure that you are exactly who you claim to be and your reasons for calling customers are legitimate. Once you’re approved, however, Branded Calling ID™ (BCID) is a game changer!

Instead of Unknown Caller, Spam Possible, or (gulp!) Spam Likely, your customers see your business name and logo directly on their screen, along with your reason for calling. That drives:

  • More calls answered
  • Faster resolution
  • Greater trust → Better relationships

The Commio Advantage

We make caller reputation management easy with:

  • STIR/SHAKEN attestation
  • Branded Calling ID (see SignatureCalling™)
  • Number report form and follow-up
  • Analytics and troubleshooting

When customers recognize you, they respond more favorably.

Messaging Compliance

TCPA, Registration, & Responsible Use

From short code to long code, and toll-free to RCS, text messaging is powerful—and heavily regulated. Regulators enforce strict rules to protect consumers from spam. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) requires express consent, clear opt-in language, easy opt-out, and accurate sender identification, plus respect for quiet hours.

Businesses that don’t follow the rules face heavy fines, carrier blocking, campaign shutdowns, and legal risks. Non-compliance can cost $500–$1,500 per message in penalties.

Phone Number Management Made Easy at Commio

In addition, carriers have their own set of requirements through the CTIA to ensure that traffic meets the TCPA mandates. Today, most A2P text messaging includes brand registration, campaign registration, declared use cases, and ongoing monitoring. Unregistered traffic is filtered or blocked automatically. See our messaging checklist here.

Common Use Cases

In addition to being a good corporate citizen and writing compliant messaging, some content is better than others—and some is never okay. Some good examples of approved traffic are appointment reminders, account alerts, customer support updates, and marketing with consent.

On the other hand, high risk content includes misleading promotions, public URL shorteners, and non-secure links. And, the lengthy list of disallowed content includes drugs, firearms, gambling, and much more. Know before you go! Click here for our complete use cases ebook.

RCS & the Future of Trusted Messaging

SMS opened the door. RCS takes messaging to the next level. Rich Communication Services (RCS) combines branding, multimedia, interactivity, and more, all in the native messaging app.

Businesses get the advantages of branded sender profiles; images, buttons, and carousels; read receipts; lower spam filtering; and—best of all—higher engagement. And it’s a win-win! Customers get a clear, verified view of the sender’s identity, safer interactions, and better overall experiences.

Because it’s more powerful, however, verification matters even more. Only trusted senders gain access. RCS requires a verified business identity, approved use cases, content review, and ongoing compliance monitoring.

Commio Makes RCS Simple

Commio’s expert Customer Success team is here to help you get set up and ensure your RCS messaging is compliant all the way through the send, including support for verification, registration, onboarding, campaign setup, and deliverability optimization. So you can focus on creating meaningful conversations. RCS isn’t just richer messaging—it’s verified messaging.

Compliance Is a Competitive Advantage

Compliance = Deliverability = Revenue. The businesses that win in cloud communications aren’t the loudest. They’re the most trusted. When your traffic is compliant, calls get answered, messages get delivered, customers engage, and revenue grows—simple as that! But when it’s not? Traffic gets blocked, reputation suffers, costs rise, and growth stalls.
