Line Information Database | LIDB

Each carrier maintains its own Line Information Database (LIDB) containing the phone numbers and related caller IDs of each of its customers. As the database owner, each carrier also has its own policies as to whether that information is included; some add your information automatically and you must opt out to remain anonymous, while others require you to opt in.

The carrier of a call recipient – i.e., the terminating carrier – is responsible for how or whether this information is displayed. In order for the Caller ID to show up on the phone of a call recipient, their carrier must get the information from the caller’s carrier and pay a small fee. If this information isn’t available, the Caller ID will display either as the city and state of origin or simply “Unavailable.” It is possible for this information to display differently depending on one’s terminating carrier.
