Location Routing Number | LRN
Historically, businesses and individuals were assigned phone numbers in the standard 10-digit North American format that would designate their geographic location and carrier so that calls would be routed correctly. With the advent of number portability, where the number ‘owner” can choose to keep the same number regardless of carrier or location, a new mechanism was needed for routing calls.
Now each phone number has a corresponding Location Routing Number (LRN) assigned by the current carrier on the back-end that provides the routing information. If a number owner moves to a new carrier, the LRN is updated while the phone number stays the same.
