What is text messaging?

Text messaging, often referred to as SMS (Short Message Service), is the practice of exchanging brief, alphanumeric messages between cellphones, pagers, or other handheld devices. It’s a widely used communication method primarily delivered through wireless carriers.

1,500 companies use Commio to deliver billions of SMS/MMS messages every month.

TEXT ANYWHERE

Flexible messaging to any handset

Text messaging is a service that sends content between cellular networks to individual handsets, serving a multitude of purposes. It ranges from informal conversations between consumers to vital information services, alerts, notifications, premium paid services, e-commerce, mobile marketing, healthcare, and security applications, among others.

Within the broader landscape of messaging methods, which includes email, instant messaging, and social media messaging on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, text messaging stands out. It stands out due to its extensive carrier and device compatibility, user-friendly simplicity, global accessibility, and cultural ubiquity.

SMS/MMS MADE EASY

How does text messaging work?

Users send messages via SMS or from a computer to a handheld device. Web-based texting relies on specialized websites known as SMS gateways.

While SMS messages traditionally had a 160-character limitation, modern SMS clients can seamlessly bypass this restriction. SMS also supports broadcasting messages to multiple recipients simultaneously, facilitated by gateway capabilities that enable SMS message exchange between different carriers and messaging platforms.

HOW DID TEXTING START?

SMS/MMS’s humble beginnings

The roots of text messaging can be traced back to early teletypewriter messaging services like TWX and Telex in the 1930s. Numeric and text-based wireless paging systems, which emerged in the 1980s and evolved into two-way services in the 1990s, initially served consumer and business messaging needs. However, they were eventually replaced by text messaging on cellular wireless networks.

The historic moment in text messaging occurred in December 1992 when Neil Papworth, an engineer at Airwide Solutions, sent the first SMS message – “Merry Christmas” – from a computer to a cellphone on the Vodafone network in the United Kingdom.

CONNECTING SMARTPHONES TO EACH OTHER

Messaging from 1G to 5G

Text messaging’s integration into cellular services began with analog 1G networks and gained significant momentum with the development of 2G digital systems, especially the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).

Early pricing strategies encouraged texting over voice calls, but as unlimited voice plans with texting became common, more users embraced the convenience of texting, formally known as SMS.

Text messaging’s impact on culture includes the introduction of new vocabulary and the use of symbols like emojis to compensate for message length limitations. However, it also raised concerns related to physical safety, with regulations in some areas governing texting while driving or engaging in other activities.

TEXT MESSAGING FEATURES

Reach millions with local 10-digit numbers

Modern smartphones enhance the texting experience with physical or virtual keyboards, making text entry more efficient than using traditional alphanumeric keypads. Text messaging has evolved with two successors: Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). EMS introduced specialized formatting, character sets, ringtones, and image transmission.

MMS, which has largely replaced EMS, supports video content, eliminating the previous 160-character limit for individual messages.
