Non-Facilities-Based Small Voice Providers Hit Deadline
As of June 30, 2022, all non-facilities-based small voice providers are now required to have implemented STIR/SHAKEN caller ID authentication per the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines.
STIR/SHAKEN is legislation designed to minimize or eliminate spam calls by requiring voice providers to “attest” to the source of each call, including the caller’s business name, phone number, and overall legitimacy. Passed in 2018, the legislation has a phased implementation that originally called for all “small” voice providers (i.e., those with fewer than 100K subscriber lines) to be fully compliant by June 30, 2023.
However, after it became clear that non-facilities based providers generate a disproportionate amount of the illegal traffic, the deadline for this subset of small providers was pushed up a year. Non-facilities-based providers support their end users via connections to another provider and don’t maintain their own physical lines.
