Cloud Communications Terminology

Competitive Local Exchange Carrier | CLEC

In the US, a competitive local exchange carrier is a telecommunications company (“carrier”) that competes with established carriers, generally the incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) such as Bell South. A virtual CLEC is also known as a VLEC.

CLECs are the result of several laws that broke up the Bell Operating System and encouraged competition. The regulatory laws governing CLECs are somewhat different than those for ILECs.
