The sanctity of Caller ID integrity is one pivotal component in this ever-evolving equation of modern communication. The relentless progression of technology has inadvertently thrown us into a conundrum where the reliability of Caller ID is incessantly questioned, and the true essence of effective communication is at stake.

Caller ID mislabeling and misidentification have emerged as clandestine perpetrators corrode the trust and dependability consumers place in telecommunication networks. This renders consumers ambivalent, contemplating the legitimacy of unidentified incoming calls, especially those emanating from trusted entities such as banks, medical facilities, and airlines. The challenge is not just about unanswered calls; this escalating concern has rightfully claimed the attention of regulatory bodies, specifically the FCC, prompting a deliberative analysis of the intricate dynamics involved.

The Unseen Impact of STIR/SHAKEN Initiative

The inception of the STIR/SHAKEN initiative by the FCC marked one stride towards identifying the source of and beginning to curb the plague of illegal robocalls and unwanted SPAM calls. The deployment of this mechanism ushered in unforeseen ramifications, most notably, the inadvertent mislabeling of Caller IDs. This initiative bestows on voice carriers the authority to store and manipulate Caller ID names, categorize calls as potential SPAM, block them, and more. The disparities observed even after populating the CNAM database with correct names and implementing the Free Caller Registry has accentuated the urgency for a comprehensive resolution.

One proposition before the FCC revolves around ensuring the untouched passage of Caller ID from the originating service provider to the terminating one. This proposal entails the onus of verifying and signing both the customer name and telephone number on the originating service provider, creating a seamless and unadulterated flow of communication. Should a call be erroneously marked as SPAM, the terminating provider should be incumbent to relay a reason code to the originating service provider, enabling prompt rectification or requisite action with the responsible customer. This approach would eradicate the unnecessary burden on consumers to pay more for Caller ID accuracy and aims to reinstate unwavering public trust in our prolific communication networks. A recent example of this idea was shared in a letter to the FCC from Raymond Pasquale, CEO of Unified Office, a managed service provider for small and medium-sized businesses: “Our customers are distraught and we are trying our best to reassure them that this will be remedied.”
